How can PM 2.5 affect my health?

Fine particles, or particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5), refers to tiny particles or droplets in the air that are two and one half microns or less in width.

Particles in the PM2.5 size range are able to travel deeply into the respiratory tract, reaching the lungs. Exposure to fine particles can cause short-term health effects such as eye, nose, throat and lung irritation, coughing, sneezing, runny nose and shortness of breath. Exposure to fine particles can also affect lung function and worsen medical conditions such as asthma and heart disease.

ENVIRONMENTAL RACISM

Refers to how minority group neighborhoods—populated primarily by people of color and members of low-socioeconomic backgrounds—are burdened with disproportionate numbers of hazards including toxic waste facilitates, garbage dumps, and other sources of environmental pollutions and foul odors that surrounds Disadvantage Poor Communities of Black People.

This oppression is often achieved systemically, through policies and practices that effectively place low-income, Poor Disadvantaged People in close proximity to polluting facilities that severely affects their health.

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

Environmental injustice happens when people are disproportionately impacted by environmental factors because of discrimination. It can happen for a variety of reasons and involve multiple types of discrimination. For example, socioeconomic status plays a major part in which groups are affected by man-made environmental hazards. Communities such as the Bayview Hunters Point in San Francisco are affected by Radioactive waste from the Naval Shipyard.

Environmental Justice

An example of environmental injustice is the communities and the health-related problems for people living near radioactive waste specifically found in POOR disadvantaged communities. These communities are generally dominated by lower socioeconomic classes that do not have the means to move away from the Radioactive waste. Because of this, they face a larger impact of water, air, and ground contamination by Radioactive waste which is mixed with a serpentine rock that causes asbestos, which increases the chances of Vapor intrusion in your water.
